Canyon Adventurers Find Loose Footing Deadly

To contact us Click HERE

An idyllic canyon adventure went bad when a hiker fell to his death at Glen Canyon on Saturday. The red rock country attracts explorers from all over the world. Unfortunately not all visitors are accustomed to walking along steep cliffs with areas of loose, talus slopes.

A National Park Service (NPS) investigation found that Robert Hunt, 49, from St. Peters, Missouri was day hiking with a friend. As he attempted to cross a talus slope at the edge of a cliff, Mr. Hunt fell, landing in the shallow water and mud 70 feet ( 21.336 meters) below. He sustained a traumatic head injury.

The NPS warns that talus slopes, or areas of loose rock on steep terrain, are extremely hazardous for hikers. Mr. Hunt had been visiting the area with four friends and had gone on several day hikes during his trip.

Girls' Adventure Travel  tip: Hey, unknown waters or unfamiliar terrain certainly increases the ol' adrenalin rush when adventuring, but remember to use caution. The unknown environment can "act" quite differently than what you are used to back home or in more familiar surroundings.

In Canyon Country, arroyos can become flooded with deadly waters without a cloud overhead. A small rain burst miles away has killed unprepared hikers as the water rushes downhill. The stone canyons do not absorb water. Likewise, extreme temperatures can cause dizziness and it is easy to lose your balance. Of course it doesn't help when the terra firma is not so firma. Even after several days in an unfamiliar environment, stay on your toes, drink plenty of water and watch your footing. I recently took a nasty tumble as I video taped a hike. Wounded pride and skinned knees was, fortunately, all that beset me. It could have been deadly.

You won't see signs like the one above at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. (I took this one on the side of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.)

_____

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area was created when the Colorado River was dammed by the Glen Canyon Dam. The waters behind the dam formed Lake Powell, named after Colorado River explorer and one-armed Civil War veteran John Wesley Powell.

140th Anniversary of Grand Canyon River Adventure

To contact us Click HERE
Flagstaff, AZ -- On the 140th anniversary of John Wesley Powell’s 1869 pioneering journey down the Green and Colorado rivers, researchers are still  discovering more about his life. So said river historian Richard Quartaroli in his seminar "John Wesley Powell: The Man, the Myth, the Mystery" last night at the Riordan Mansion State Park. Quartaroli has been researching the adventurer and explorer for years.

Powell, the one-armed Civil War veteran shoved off into "The Great Unknown" with an incomplete map in hand. One of the purposes of his 1879 Grand Canyon River adventure was to map parts of the river and its canyon systems. "Powell was trying to fill-in the blank spots on the map," said Quartaroli of Northern Arizona (NAU)'s Cline Library Special Collections. Quartaroli showed examples of the incomplete map that Powell was using on his expedition.

Today, adventure gals can retrace part of Powell's route through the white water of the mesmerizing Grand Canyon. Canyoneers, a Flagstaff, Arizona based river company will guide you along the Colorado River from Lee's Ferry through the Grand Canyon National Park. Canyoneer's knowledgeable guides bring to life Powell's adventure through story telling and maps - more accurate than Powell's, we'd say! Go to www.canyoneers.com or call 928-526-0924 for information on canyon adventure travel.

Girl's Arizona Adventure: Fish Pedicure?

To contact us Click HERE

Adventure girls who love to fish are trying something new this angling season: pedicures done by small, finned friends. Yes, stick your phalanges in the pedicure bath and LIVE fish eat away the dead skin between your toes, around your toenails or on your heels.

You won't be able to angle these fish from your local lake or reservoir. Nope, these tiny fish -- Garra Ruffa to be specific -- are imported from Turkey and look similar to the small fish you would see in your dentist's aquarium. Friendly, kind and persistent dry skin eaters. Yum!

Clients enjoy the relaxing "lip" massage and one adventure girl reported that even her husband commented on her soft feet after a Spa Fish Treatment.

Now we adventure girls have a new meaning to the sign posted "Gone Fishin'" on our office door.

Safari in South Africa is like no other and the experience at Legends Golf and Safari Resort is a great mix of wild life and recreation.  Legends is a three hour drive north of Johannesburg in the Limpopo province and is juts outside of the Entabeni Safari Conservancy.  The accommodations are luxury and contemporary set out in the wild or the bush as they call it.  We had a fantastic time going on safari at dawn and at dusk, which are the best times of the day to see wildlife.  We saw three of the Big 5 (Elephant, Rhinoceros, Lion).  The two we did not see were the Leopard and Buffalo. while it's fun to count the big and to see them, it's just as much fun seeing the others and we saw plenty as you can see from the photo show.  One treat was seeing two cheetahs, brothers just walking down the dirt road.  Fortunately for us they did not run.  They are the fastest of the cats.
I just love going on safari and being in the bush.  It's so peaceful and serene, especially at sun rise and sunset.  The African sky is breathtaking.  The sky produces brilliant colors at different times of the day and the reflection from the horizon and off of the water are phenomenal.  One experience I adore is stopping at sunset at the end of the safari for a sundowner (a cocktail at sunset in the bush).  it's romantic, a little adventurous and spooky at first.  Then you relax and forget that you're in the wild and wild animals may lurking.  Maybe the cocktails have something to do with it.  The local favorite and mine is the Amarula, a creamed liquor made from the amarula fruit that grows from a tree.
Next stop Cape Town!

Road Trip - Blue Harbor Resort and Spa

To contact us Click HERE
The Traveling Eye is about to embark on a "road trip" to Sheboygan, Wisconsin and stay at the Blue Harbor Resort and Spa.  Sheboygan is about a two and a half hour drive from Chicago.  We're excited because the last time we road tripped we had a blast.  This time we're going to video blog from the car, no holds barred.

Blue Harbor Resort and Spa has just completed an extensive renovation and is now ready for the season.  It's a great and classic lakeside resort that offers fun for the entire family and has the areas largest indoor water park.

Another part of the renovation was at the Reflections Spa featuring Aveda products.

Bonnie and I (Ja'Vonne) are going to experience as much as we can and that Blue Harbor Resort and the area has to offer during our visit   .  We'll be enjoying spa treatments, fishing, kayaking and cycling just to name a few of the activities.  We're going to unleash our inner child.

I always refer to AAA's Road Trip tips before I hit the road to make sure I and my car are road trip ready.  The tips can be found by clicking AAA

Make sure you check back with us to see what we're up to on our road trip adventure and visit to The Blue Harbor Resort and Spa starting this Sunday, April 29th.

Until then........

Blue Harbor Resort & Spa - Gone Fishing

To contact us Click HERE
Having a blast in Sheboygan @ the Blue Harbor Resort & Spa.  Yesterday we went out on a fishing boat with Wolf Pack Adventures.  Patrick, the owner is such fun to be with and he assured us that we would catch something.  He put out nine poles to increase our chances.  We started in the Sheboygan River and went out to Lake Michigan.

Unfortunately, for the other two members from The Traveling Eye crew the fishing boat experience was not so much fun.  Howard and Bonnie succumbed to the motion of the ocean (lake) but ocean rhymes.  One by one they went down.  First, Howard started getting dizzy and sweating profusely, then Bonnie fed the fish.  Well, at least she did her part because right after she "fed the fish" we got a bite.  That's when I stepped into action, grabbed the pole and reeled in the big one.  OK, it wasn't that big but I was just as excited.  Click here for the video of my catch. http://youtu.be/YgeGcOh0YBY

My salmon is around 5 pounds and Wolf Pack Adventures will send my salmon off to have it smoked and shipped to me.  I laughed, I cried, it became a part of me!!!

Until next time...

SheBOYgan, Wisconsin!

To contact us Click HERE
Hi Everyone!

Whenever I would hear the name Sheboygan, I heard it the way Jerry Lewis would say it, "She BOY gan! After spending two wonderful, peaceful, yet exciting days here, I still say SheBOYgan, but with excitement!

As you read in Ja'Vonne's previous blog; after checking to make sure the turn signals were working properly, we jumped into her car and left the hustle and bustle of Chicago and two hours later we were entering the driveway of the Blue Harbor Resort in Sheboygan.

Blue Harbor Resort is impressive. It is a majestic example of stunning architecture. It actually took my breath away. It reminded me of the summer homes in the Katherine Hepburn movies with its verandas and balconies. The decor, from the newly renovated lobby and restaurants, to my luxurious oversized room, complete with fireplace and Jacuzzi tub, was AMAZING!

The tone was set with the look and feel of the resort; the icing on the cake was the Reflections Spa! I love spa treatments and I am pretty particular about the way services are given. Walking through the doors of the spa I instantly relaxed. Not because of a "holistic" look, music, and candles, but because of the genuine holistic feel and spirit of the Spa and the ladies that work there. My specialist was Charna. She and I became one. I could tell she was listen to what my body was telling her. She is the best.  I will have to give the Reflections Spa at the
Blue Harbor Resort a perfect 10.

Day two – we were introduced to the outdoor wonders of Sheboygan.  I didn’t realize that people surfed on Lake Michigan.  Sheboygan is a popular destination for surfing, sailing, fishing, hunting, bird watching, kayaking, and so much more.  We were invited to join Captain Patrick on his fishing boat the Wolf Pack II. Now, those of you who know me understand that I do not do boats, especially boats on Lake Michigan.  I allowed my adventurous co-host, Ja’Vonne, to talk me into going on this fishing excursion.  To make a long story short, she caught a good sized salmon, I fed the fishes.  Our cameraman, Howard, didn’t feed them but boy did he see double.

Despite all that, I had a good time. Captain Patrick and his first mate Bill were awesome.  They were friendly, patient, and kept the mood light and fun.  Even with my head overboard I couldn’t stop laughing.

Feet back on land, we stopped by one of Sheboygan’s sports shops EOS and met Michael.  Of course the dare devil of The Traveling Eye wanted to learn how to Kayak so Michael put her in a kayak, and with some direction he pushed her out into the water and off she went.  She did an awesome job!  Afterwards we did something I could enjoy; we biked along the lakefront and took in the shops and sites. It was so relaxing and fun.

Tomorrow is another day and we plan on doing what we do best EAT AND SHOP!!

Until next time, keep your EYE to the sky!
Bonnie

Go for the Gold this Weekend

To contact us Click HERE

Flagstaff, AZ -- The San Francisco Peaks are alive with color this weekend. You can expect an illuminated mountain bike ride or hike as turning Aspen trees are dressed in glowing shades of golds and greens.

The Arizona Daily Sun reported that "none could remember a better fall day of cycling to the Inner Basin than Saturday." So Adventure Girl decided to hike up the Kachina Trail just outside the Arizona Snowbowl yesterday to see what all the superlatives were all about. The trail is relatively flat - considering you're on the side of mountains that contain Arizona's highest peak, Mount Humphreys at 12,637 feet (3,852 m).

But even the lower trail, at 9500 ft above sea level, put a cramp in my breathing. Once I blew the spider webs out of my lungs, I was entering The Kachina Peaks Wilderness Area. I was inspired to bound from rock to rock by the doe prancing through the terrain ahead of me. As she leap up the steep slope to the left, I got a glimpse of her twin fawns. They looked hardly big enough to survive the imminent cold snow of winter. When the doe stopped and looked at me over her back, both fawns mimicked, duplicating her statuesque pose.

"I need my camera mounted to my forehead," I sigh my favorite last words before the picture of the bull elk, herd of mulies or gaggle of turkeys disappear into the underbrush. This time, all three pictures disappeared before I could get my Lumix out of the day pack slung over my shoulder.

The photo below is all I got of the Mule deer doe and her babies, that I named Ray and Mi as I sprinted along making up stories in my head.

As you can see, the colors were disappointing on the Kachina Trail. The gold Aspens on the road to the Arizona Snowbowl were more memorable. I zoomed by them in my truck as photographers vied for position and straightening their tri-pods in front of the glowing plumage. That was at about 3:30 on Thursday.

The many wind-downed trees on the Kachina Trail were surprising to me. "Widow makers" they call 'em in the NW. The forest service has cut paths through those fallen across the trail. It looked to me that a heavy wind came down the mountain from the northeast and snapped many of the tall Aspens. The winds usually come from the west. Perhaps the trees had grown strong against the westerly winds, but when a big one came from the northeast, snapper-rooney! I'm no forester, but I'd like to check out my theory. Looks like it happened some time since late spring, since the broken trees had plenty of leaves. The forest service had time to clean up the trail, so it must have happened over four weeks ago, I am surmising. So my guess is that the wind storm happened sometime between July 1 and September 8. Anyone know? Leave a comment below.

Kachina Trail's varied terrain makes it a personal favorite. You start out on a well-worn, serpentine trail through tall ferns. After a gradual climb, you step over igneous rock blown off the top of the volcanic peaks above. The trail snakes around some huge boulders that make you wonder at the force of that volcanic explosion. Kachina Trail eventually breaks out of the forest and takes you across wildflower-covered meadows where you can get good views of Arizona below. The ferns are crumpled brown by night-time frosts and the only fall wildflowers-- hearty lavender-colored asters and something small and yellow -- can be seen now.

I recommend that you head out to Lockett Meadow this weekend. There will probably still be color left along the Water Line Trail. I'm going to go look for it. Maybe I'll see you out there. I'll definitely check out the Waterline Road Extension toward Bear Jaw Canyon as recommended by Randy Wilson of the Arizona Daily Sun. On second thought, maybe I'll just park at the Bear Jaw Trailhead and hike from there. I remember a lot of aspen trees in that area. Let's go for the gold!

Weather and avalanche conditions hinder rescue efforts

Illumination Saddle, Mount Hood, OR. Photo: Portland Mountain Rescue

Weather and avalanche conditions are hindering a search today for two overdue climbers on Mt. Hood in Oregon. On Saturday, December 12, members of the Portland Mountain Rescue (PMR) discovered three sets of tracks. Following the tracks near Illumination Saddle led them to discover the body of one overdue climber, Luke Gullenburg, 26, who appeared to have fallen from higher on Reid Headwall. Efforts to search higher on the mountain were frustrated by unstable, avalanche-prone snow conditions.

On Sunday, December 13, snow conditions again hindered ground-based searching on the upper mountain. Air-based searches were conducted by Civil Air Patrol and the Oregon Army National Guard.

Today PMR reports plans to send two reconnaissance teams to assess conditions and possibly climb the South Side route, which the missing climbers had indicated was their planned route of descent. Katie Nolan, 29, and Anthony Vietti, 24 are the missing hikers. Friends and family continue to pray for their safety.

Adventure Girls Beware: The abyss could suck you in

To contact us Click HERE

Grand Canyon hiking tip: Don’t be mesmerized by the scenery and forget to watch your footing.

Grand Canyon, AZ -- “If you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you,” said German philosopher Frederich Nietzsche. The man whose body was found this week hundreds of feet below “The Abyss” in Grand Canyon National Park may have been gazing. Or perhaps he went over the steep edge intentionally.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, January 5, Grand Canyon patrol rangers noticed a light-colored passenger vehicle parked on Hermit Road at The Abyss. Upon returning the next morning to check on the vehicle and finding it still unoccupied, park officials called a search investigation and first used a spotting scope to glass the area below the rim. A helicopter reconnaissance crew was called in.

Grand Canyon National Park’s The Abyss is notable for its steep drop. The south rim comes to an end near the roadway and visitors report “there is only air in front of and below you.”

On Wednesday, January 6, the helicopter crew reported spotting the body of a lone male approximately 300 feet below the rim at the Abyss which is on far west end of the south rim. Search and rescue personnel then rappelled down to prepare the body for transport.  The body was transported to the rim by helicopter via long-line operation and then transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner.

The incident reminds girl adventurers to always be cautious when hiking canyon country. Girls Adventure Guide hiking safety tips include:
  • Drink plenty of water; dehydration can cause dizziness and unbalance -- not good symptoms when hiking near the edge.
  • keep pets on leash - jumping pets can create unbalance
  • avoid hiking alone
  • tell people where you will be, give them a phone number to call if you don’t check back in after your hike.

Always be alert of the dangers of falling. Don’t be mesmerized by the scenery and forget to watch your footing. Beware: if you gaze long into an abyss, the hypnotic effects of its beauty may cause you to forget your physical surrounds. The abyss could suck you in.

The Grand Canyon National Park Service is conducting an investigation into the incident.

Extreme Snow Recreationists Lack Proper Permits

To contact us Click HERE

Low visibility and avalanche warning accompany severe winter storms in Flagstaff, AZ this month.

Flagstaff, AZ -- Recent search and rescue (SAR) operations in the Kachina Peaks Wilderness area remind snow recreationists that requisite backcountry permits can aid rescue efforts. Three Flagstaff residents attempting to summit Humphreys Peak during January’s severe snow storm were rescued by Coconino County crews and Arizona Snowbowl snowcat drivers.

Earlier that week, fifteen SAR personnel on snowshoes and snowcats searched outside ski boundaries on Agassiz Peak for an overdue snowboarder. The nineteen-year-old walked to SAR containment team on Friedlein Prairie Road. He was transported by ambulance to Flagstaff Medical Center.

The three Humphrey Peak hikers described themselves as experienced climbers reported the Arizona Daily Sun. They left the Arizona Snowbowl ski area at 11 a.m. and headed for the summit. They hiked past the WWII bomber at “Dutchman” and reached 12,000 feet before weather forced them back from their Arizona adventure. They were guided back by SAR’s snowcat lights at 10 p.m. after becoming disoriented.

None of those rescued had Kachina Peaks Wilderness permits.

The permit is required for persons accessing the Kachina Peaks Wilderness from the Arizona Snowbowl and two locations along Snowbowl Road during winter months only.

Steep slopes make the Kachina Peaks Wilderness susceptible to avalanche conditions and unstable snow.
The Coconino National Forest Service (CNFS) hopes that the permit will inform snow recreationists about hazards of the winter backcountry. It is designed to assist the CNFS and the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office with SAR efforts when needed.

Hikers and snow recreationists using the backcountry during the winter should be trained in avalanche recognition and rescue techniques by certified instructors recommends experts at the CNFS. The CNFS also lists hiking safety tips at  13 essential equipment items for hikers using the backcountry.

Adventure girl, get your permit!
The fine for the first permit offense is $50. Violators are punishable by fines of <$5000 for an individual, or $10,000 for others, or imprisonment for Read more about the rules and regulations associated with the permit here.

Kachina Wilderness backcountry hikers and snow recreationists are required to register at Arizona Snowbowl’s Hart Prairie Lodge ticket windows or above the Agassiz Lift.

The free permit is available at Peaks Ranger District and Supervisor's Office in winter weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on weekends at Agassiz Lodge at the Arizona Snowbowl (when Snowbowl is open) from 9 to 11 a.m.

Michigan’s Bridge Monopoly Battle Rages On

To contact us Click HERE

With monumental assistance from allies in Michigan’s legislature, Grosse Pointe billionaire Manuel Moroun continues his fight to maintain his private bridge monopoly on truck traffic and truck toll revenue between Windsor and Detroit. Wednesday, June 13, the Michigan House Appropriations Committee approved a bill to prohibit Governor Rick Snyder from using money from Michigan’s Strategy Fund to pay for any part of construction of a competing freeway to freeway bridge project two miles downstream from Moroun’s Ambassador Bridge. The Ambassador Bridge is the only existing highway bridge crossing the Detroit River between Detroit and Windsor, and Moroun collects all those truck and auto tolls.
In the last two legislative sessions, bills passed which prohibit Michigan’s Department of Transportation from spending any money on new Detroit River bridge construction, but Moroun wanted to make sure the Strategy Fund’s economic development money was also cut off as a source of funding for any competing bridge. He is also circulating petitions to put a state constitutional amendment on the ballot requiring a public vote before any competing bridge could be built. Over the last few years, the Moroun family has also donated about half a million dollars in campaign funds to federal candidates who have consistently opposed federal funding of new Detroit River bridge construction.
Despite this unprecedented example of self-interested lobbying, Governor Snyder will announce today a proposal, backed by Canada’s government and U.S. officials, for construction of the downriver New International Trade Crossing which would sidestep Michigan’s legislative funding restrictions Moroun has lobbied so diligently for. The proposed new $1 billion bridge and $2 billion attached bridge end customs plazas, would be paid for by privately collected toll revenues from bridge traffic, and by Canadian and U.S. federal contributions to customs facility construction. No funds would come from Michigan’s state coffers, Snyder promises.
Snyder is already authorized under Michigan’s Urban Cooperation Act to participate with Canada and the U.S. federal government in an international bridge authority which could fund the bridge, contract for its construction and operation, and arrange a private contract for toll collection. Canada has offered to advance Michigan’s $550 million share of construction costs against Michigan’s portion of toll revenue from truck and auto traffic over the new bridge. Besides the construction jobs and permanent operating jobs created by the new span, Michigan’s gross domestic product should increase by $2.2 billion annually from traffic across the new bridge, with new state and local tax revenues rising by $400 million each year, and Michigan personal incomes going up by $4 billion.
Given these prodigious improvements in Michigan’s economic quality of life from construction of the proposed new span, it becomes clear that Moroun’s political campaign fund donations are the only real reason for state and federal elected officials’ opposition to the project.

Congressional Inaction Kills Pennsylvania Wind Power Project

Spanishwind power developer Gamesa, Inc., citing uncertain federal wind power subsidies, has announced cancellation of a proposed 22,000 acre, 60 megawatt 30 turbinewind farm on Shaffer Mountain near Central City, Pennsylvania. Gamesa had beenpushing forward with development of the proposed wind farm, even in the face ofenvironmental opposition from a threatened lawsuit challenging U. S. Fish and WildlifeService approval of the project, based on the alleged impact of the turbines onpopulations of an endangered species of Indiana bats which migrate through thearea.
Congressionalinaction on reauthorization of tax credits for wind power development iscosting jobs in both the manufacturing and construction sectors of our economy, and the job losses in the renewable power sector will continue until Congressacts. The failure of our political leaders to even take up legislative measureson this important issue reflects poorly on both political parties.

State Fiscal Problems Threaten Illinois Wind Power Development

To contact us Click HERE

Cashstrapped Illinois government has borrowed nearly all of the state’s alternativeenergy supply investment fund, crippling future development of wind power inthe state. Established in 2010, the fund was opened in September 2010 withinitial cash of $7.1 million, and within a month $6.7 million was borrowed byvarious state agencies to pay past due bills. Although the Illinois PowerAgency says the debt is being repaid, and it plans to use the repaid cash forits intended purpose, renewable power developers are doubtful the fund’sbalance will become available to them with any certainty in the future.
Bycurrent law, there is a 2025 deadline for Illinois to get 25% of its electricpower from renewable sources. However, changing conditions in the state’selectric market are driving wind power developers away from the state. Houstonbased EDP Renewables has closed its Bloomington office and, although thatcompany has invested $1.5 billion Illinois wind farms, future wind power developments are now on hold. “Weneed to be able to lock in long term contracts in order to sell our power,”says EDP Senior Manager of Government and Regulatory Affairs Jeff Bishop. “Currently, the way the renewable portfolio standard is structured, it makes it verydifficult for us to procure long term contracts.”
WhenCommonwealth Edison signed its first long term wind power contracts in 2010,Com Ed had 99 percent of residential customers in the Chicago region, but thatmarket share is rapidly diminishing under recent legislation permittingmunicipal aggregation. Already 100 cities, villages and towns have moved theirresidents to other power companies, and another 160 have passed measures whichwill further erode the Com Ed market share. Com Ed predicts that by 2017 itwill have only 65% or so of the Chicago region market for residential power.
TheIllinois Power Agency, which procures energy on behalf of Illinois utilitycompanies, says this sort of market volatility makes it impossible to grant longterm contracts at stable prices for new wind power development. Chicago basedInvenergy’s Director of Origination Craig Gordon believes that the municipalaggregation legislation jeopardized even those long term renewable powercontracts already in place. “We’ve seen a lot of these municipalities areswitching their suppliers … and what that does for folks who have long termcontracts, is put those contracts in jeopardy,” Gordon says.
Onceagain, political meddling with long term power market forces in attempts to fixshort term problems has created a nightmare for the long term plans ofalternative energy developers, and the uncertainty is driving them out of ourstate.

Political Rhetoric Builds No Roads

To contact us Click HERE

With a mere two weeks left before the current band aid Highway Trust Fund extension legislation expires, Senators and Congressmen seem more focused on political game playing than they are on the closed door conference committee negotiations which give the only hope for any legislative initiative beyond another episode of kicking the can down the road. Last week Senate Environment and Public Works Chairman Barbara Boxer pulled five concrete mixers onto the pavement at the foot of Capitol Hill as a backdrop for her speech to a “get the bill done” rally where she intoned, “There is only one group standing in the way of the bill … That group of people that’s standing in the way of jobs and business – those are the House Republicans. That’s the facts, and that’s the truth.” New York Senator Charles Schumer was even less circumspect in his remarks in front of the concrete trucks, referring to “a hundred House Republicans – militants, radicals, extremists – who actually believe the federal government should not be involved in highway building.”
Within minutes, a press release from the other side of the aisle blamed Senate Democrats for inaction on this most important economic legislation which has been languishing for over three years in Capitol back rooms. House Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman John Mica shot back with a reference to the pet provisions House leadership wants included in any long term highway legislation. Referring to House initiatives to cut back on environmental protection and review for road construction projects, and specific fast tracking of the Keystone XL Canadian tar sands oil pipeline, Mica’s release says “I am disappointed in the fact that Senate negotiators have yet to move on key House reform proposals …. In addition, the Senate appears unwilling to compromise at all on the Keystone XL pipeline.”
Speaker Boehner has already indicated he expects to see nothing more than another temporary extension - six months this time – pushing back any opportunity for leadership and a real solution to this major economic issue until after the presidential election. Despite a letter from 17 transportation and construction industry groups sent to all 47 conferees pointing out that the Highway Trust Fund will run out of cash in early 2013 unless a long term reauthorization measure with increased revenue sources is passed, Senators and Congressmen are still putting their pet projects and reelection rhetoric ahead of the nation’s economic and infrastructure needs. The industry groups made clear that the Congressional tourniquet on infrastructure funding is causing gangrene in this major sector of our economy: “A six month extension is not the way to go,” their letter says. “This approach could further exacerbate the Highway Trust Fund’s financial crisis and cause states to cut back on transportation investments during what should be the peak construction season.”
Actually, this is the fourth year during which state and local governments have been forced to defer or cancel much needed infrastructure construction and repair projects because of the uncertainty surrounding availability of federal motor fuel tax revenues to pay for projects which are already approved. Several state highway officials are already dealing with what the industry calls “hard stops and starts” on jobs already underway – a very expensive and wasteful manner of conducting any sort of construction effort. This monumental lack of Congressional leadership on what should be a non-controversial issue is already responsible for hundreds of millions in wasted taxpayer dollars at a time when needs are growing while revenues are shrinking. There is no excuse for such behavior in Washington.
